Another Oil Spill in the Bay

UPDATE
The Coastal Region Emergency Operations Center has been activated. The City of Albany and the East Bay Regional Park District are in contract with the California Emergency Management Agency and with Unified Command to determine if booms are needed to reduce the chance of oil reaching shore in our area. At this time, the projected trajectory is south of the Bay Bridge.

The spill was reported at about 7 a.m. from the Dubai Star, a Panamanian-flagged vessel located at Anchorage 9 south of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, according to Lt. Steve Youde.

Cosco Busans Lasting Impact

San Francisco Chronicle follows up on Cosco Busans Impact.

“There’s no doubt that there were damaging consequences in the bay,” said UC Santa Cruz Professor Pete Raimondi, chair of the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department.

Mussels are tested for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, a toxic component of petroleum. They serve as a fingerprint of the Cosco Busan fuel oil, and are used as a gauge for how long the oil remains in the bay. The levels have dropped since the spill, which means there is less oil in the environment. The contaminant, which can affect reproduction and bioaccumulate in the species that feed on it, has remained the longest at Brooks Island off Richmond and near Albany’s sandy beach.

Cosco Busan pilot charged with two felony counts

The pilot of the container ship that struck the Bay Bridge in November and spilled more than 50,000 gallons of fuel oil into San Francisco Bay was charged today with two felony counts of lying in annual physical exams about the medications he was taking.

Ongoing Albany Clean Up and Volunteers

Command has assigned an environmental contractor to cleanup the Albany shoreline. Beach clean-up began Saturday, November 10, and is on-going. Clean up of the neck and bulb areas will begin tomorrow, Nov. 14. The clean up will continue for as long as necessary.

A boom currently spans from Albany Bulb to Pt. Isabel to protect wildlife at the Albany Mudflats.

Albany staff is participating with Berkeley staff to coordinate emergency
response and volunteer efforts.

More Volunteer Trainings Set in Berkeley
Volunteers can get more HazMat training and equipment at another volunteer trainings set for Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Volunteers who are interested in helping to clean beaches and shoreline are encouraged attend a hazardous materials and physical danger training. No cleanup on the rocks is allowed.

The training classes is limited, so it’s first come, first serve.

WHAT: A training on the safe cleanup of oil spill residue

WHEN: Wednesday, November 14, 1 p.m. – 5 pm.

WHERE: Hs Lordships, in the Berkeley Marina off of Seawall Dr. (http://www.hslordships.com/directions.html)

WHEN: Saturday, November 17, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

WHERE: West Berkeley Senior Center, 1900 Sixth Street, Berkeley

More information will be posted on the City of Berkeley’s website (www.CityofBerkeley.info) as soon as it is confirmed.

** The Cal State Department of Fish and Game is not providing any training for the handling of wildlife at this time. Training is only for cleaning the shoreline.**

Volunteers who got Monday’s training from California State Department of Fish and Game can come back all week and next weekend to help out. If you’re interested in volunteering, please call the Nature Center at (510) 981-6720.

Albany Bulb Open

Albany Bulb Forever. Welcome Back!

The Albany City website reports that parts of the Albany shoreline will remain closed however the Albany Bulb is now open. Dogs must remain leashed in all park areas and avoid all contact will oil.

I’ll be happy to see my friends at the Bulb. I’m thankful that Point Isabell was available to dog owners but after spending almost every morning at the Bulb I felt sort of lost. It felt like I’d transferred to another school in mid-semester and didn’t know anyone at the new school.
